First Week Thoughts

I have had a few days to think about how we performed as a team and how the players performed individually at the conclusion of our first week of practice.

Offensively I think that our players understand the game better than we did last year. It looks like we have guys that know when to take an extra base, when to bunt and when to just swing away. We use the fall practices to gauge where our players are in their knowledge of the game.

Defensively, I believe that we are very strong. After we were able to find a solution to our shortstop problem last year, with the insertion of Kris Cauchon, we were solid defensively. With the bats playing the way they did last year, it is extremely important to be able to play great defense.

Our pitcher's continue to get better. At this time of year we focus a lot on first-pitch strikes, avoiding leadoff and two-out walks, etc. It is important for them to concentrate and not become flustered or relax. They must have a quiet intensity on the mound.

I thought some of our new players performed extremely well last week. Hopefully they can continue to get better.

Go Cards!
